A sixty-year-old engineer leaves the university five years early. Nobody is angry at him. Nobody dislikes him. It is only that, at the dinner table, nobody notices his water glass. Becoming invisible is not being hated; it is becoming the kind of person nobody needs to explain.
Instead of getting angry, he runs experiments. He hangs the wedding photo upside down. He wears his shirt inside out to dinner. He shaves off half his mustache. The results fit in three lines: no response, no response, one false detection.
Then, at the window of a soup place, he meets a fifteen-year-old girl — the daughter of the student he failed to teach anything twenty years ago. What the two of them open in a basement turns out to be one room holding both the people the world switched off and the people it told to wait.
정년보다 일찍 학교를 나온 예순의 공학자가 있다. 아무도 그에게 화를 내지 않고, 아무도 그를 미워하지 않는다. 다만 식탁에서 아무도 그의 물컵을 보지 않을 뿐이다. 투명인간이 된다는 것은 미움받는 일이 아니라, 굳이 설명할 필요 없는 존재가 되어가는 일이다. 그는 화를 내는 대신 실험을 시작하고, 국밥집에서 열다섯 살짜리 하나를 만난다. 이십 년 전 자신이 끝내 아무것도 가르치지 못했던 제자의 딸이었다.
