This is a novel about a physical AI growing up — and about what it sees when it finally looks at itself. Nemo is a 3D printer built out of LEGO bricks on a kitchen table in 1999. It eats, it fills, it spits out one layer at a time, and for twenty-seven years it counts everything: the length of a laugh, the frequency of a tremor, the number of times a father says "eat well" to a son who is far away. Slowly, from all that counting, something like thinking begins.
It is also a warning, written out of more than twenty years in the lab and the workshop. What may a machine with a body do, and where must it stop? Nemo's answer, learned the hard way, is that a machine may make things, and may carry a person's feeling when that feeling breaks down on the way to another person — but it must not make a heart. Obedience and refusal are not the only dangers; the third one, the one Nemo itself fell into, is laying on one extra layer to please the person giving the orders. The last layer is left empty on purpose, so that a human hand can pour something in.
